Techniques of Rain Water Harvesting

Rain Water Harvesting:

The process of collection and sorting rain water forms roofs or a surface catchment is called rain water harvesting. The stored rain water is treated before use because it may contain bird faeces chemical and other pollution which need to be removed before use. There are two ways of rainwater harvesting :

       a)  Rooftop Rainwater harvesting: The water falling on the roof of a building is allowed to flow either into a storage tank and used for various household activities. This water may contain soil, impurities and chemicals. This water should be cleaned before use. For this purpose, layers of coarse sand, gravel and broken bricks are arranged in the storage tank. The water when passes through these layers gets cleaned.

      b) Roadside Rainwater harvesting : The rain water that falls on tarred roads around buildings can be collected and stored by these techniques. Percolation pits covered with concrete slabs having holes are constructed. Rainwater falling on roads goes into these pits through the holes. After filtration, in the percolation pits, rainwater enters the recharge well through the outlet pipe and gradually seeps into the soil.

The advantage of rainwater harvesting is that it increases the availability of groundwater. This helps to overcome water problems.
